방글라데시에서의 삶을 상상해본 적이 없어서. GV에서 프로듀서가 말해주길, 기생충이 한국 현실의 모든 것이 아니듯 이 영화 역시 방글라데시의 모든 것이 아니라 한다.

생존의 목적이 내내 궁금했다. 비단 이들뿐만 아니라 전 세계의 모든 사람들이 “왜” 내일이 보장되지 않음에도 목숨을 부지하며 내일을 도모할까. 그 원동력이 궁금했다. 생명력의 근원이 궁금하다.

처음 본 방글라데쉬 영화였다. 다음 영화제에서 방글라데쉬 영화가 있다면 분명 또 선택할 것 같다. 요즘 여행 유튜버들의 해외 여행기를 보고 있는데, 이 영화를 보며 영화의 차별성과 중요성을 다시 깨닫기도 했다. 물론 쓰인 돈이 다르고, 픽션과 다큐의 차이도 있지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 결이 다르다 정말!

Saiful, whose only asset is his own body, leaves his hometown to become an ambulance driver in the capital city, Dhaka. Although he daily sees death, the most challenging thing for him is the immense poverty around him. His hometown, where his wife is left with his parents and two young children, is located on a delta that is slowly shrinking because an ever-increasing river that surrounds it. Saiful’s family lacks financial resources. His first wife from an arranged marriage tries to work abroad, but she blames him for being too poor to buy a flight ticket. Now responsible for two wives, with no other means of support, he gradually loses his mental and physical health amid the worsening situations. No Ground Beneath the Feet is Bangladeshi director Mohammad Rabby Mridha’s feature debut. It portrays a man driven to extremes because of the combined stress of natural disasters caused by climate change and the absence of an essential social safety net. (PARK Sungho)
