포스터에 낚여버렸다.

‘노킹 온 헤븐스 도어’의 리메이크 아닌 리메이크스러운 느낌이지만, 사실 전작만 하지 못하다. 영화에서 어떤 새로움을 느껴야 할지 모르겠다.

두 배우의 열연은 좋았다. 최민식의 흡연 장면같은 어떤 장면들에선 정말 연기력이 아깝다는 생각도.

감독은 코로나 이전에 전국 방방곳곳을 돌아다니며 정말 열심히 찍었다 했다. 그리고 귀엽게 찍었다 했다. 어떤 느낌으로 그리 말했는지 알겠지만, 어쩔 수 없이 열심히가 모든 것의 방패가 될 수는 없다.

딸을 사랑하지만 마지막 죽음을 앞두고선 까맣게 잊어버린다거나, 갑자기 싹튼 203에 대한 남식의 친근감 등, “그저 눈감아 주세요” 하기엔 걸리적거리는 것들이 많았다.

취소된 2020년 칸 영화제의 초청작이자 2021 부산국제영화제의 개막작이었다. 그들은 내가 보지 못한 무엇을 본 것인지 궁금하다.

부산국제영화제 개막식 야외상영으로 보았다. 개막식이 끝나자 많은 영화인들이 자리를 뜨고, 일부 시네필만이 남아 영화를 관람했다. 봉준호 감독과 같은 공간 같은 시간에서 영화를 소비했다는 것에 의의를 두려 한다.

No. 203 (Choi Min-sik), a long-term prisoner, is now old. All he wants is to get out of prison as soon as possible. However, No. 203 feels something is not right. He soon discovers that he has only three months to live because of a brain tumor. This knowledge leads him to begin planning his break from prison. While on the run, No. 203 finds an unexpected companion, Namsik (Park Hae-il), a man who suffers from a rare incurable disease but lives by stealing medicine he needs from hospitals because he can′t afford the expensive medicines. When they accidentally steal a large sum of black money from Ms. Yoon (Youn Yuh-jung) and run away, she orders her henchmen to chase No. 203 and Namsik. Director Im Sang-soo′s Heaven: To the Land of Happiness received a great deal of attention even before its completion and is finally premiering at the 2021 Busan International Film Festival. As a delightful yet lyrical road movie, the film has a variety of paths to touching moments. For example, the film has Director Im Sang-soo′s vivid and lively directing skills, brilliant performances of superstars Choi Min-sik, Park Hae-il, and Youn Yuh-jung (whose performance is reminiscent of her role as Baek Geumok in The Taste of Money (2012)). Cho Han-cheul, Lim Sung-jae, and Lee El round out the amazing cast, who become one with the characters they portray. ′Let′s Go to the Land of Happiness′ sung by Han Daesoo and Jang Kiha provides a perfect accompaniment to the film′s action. This heartwarming road movie asks precious questions about how we view our lives. (JUNG Hanseok)
